RCHS ran a solid pack in the varsity boys race to defeat the favored Chino Hills Huskies. Chino Hills had defeated the Cougars in two previous invitationals quite easily, but the Cougars ran with a pack mentality in placing their scoring five all in the top nine finishers. Daniel Dolen clocked 15:54 over the three mile Red Hill Park course to take third. Four seconds back was Daniel Chavez (4th) at 15:58 and then Chris Weiland (16:11), Darius Riley (16:16) and Grant Sipos (16:20) crossed the line in places seven, eight and nine to secure a 31-47 victory. Marco Campos, running with his right shoe half on for nearly the entire race, took 20th at 17:03.
Erin Holton did what she usually does in league meets, WIN! Holton took the lead in the first 30 yards and never looked back in clocking 18:22 to win the varsity girls race. Without Britanni Matthews (foot injury), the Cougars were down half of an excellent upfront duo. Chino Hills packed superbly to take places two through seven and thirteen to easily win the meet. with 20 points. Rancho had Megan Mareti in ninth at 19:42, Mia Saiza in 15th at 20:27, Ivy Vollaire in 17th at 20:39 and Haley Braker in 27th at 21:27 to round out the scoring five. Rancho totaled 69 points to claim second with St. Lucy’s in third at 90.
The JV boys notched a perfect score of 15 in claiming the top five places led by Marcquise Holcomb at 16:55. Aaron Cortes (17:12), Jacob Burch (17:39), Christian Sanchez (17:39) and Julian Gutierrez (17:47) grabbed places two through five to lead the Cougars to perfection.
The JV girls also were victorious with a tight grouping that helped them defeat Chino Hills. Skyler (6th at 22:27), Sarah G. (7th at 22:38), Emily O. (8th at 22:42), Julia Ruiz (12th at 22:53) and Taylor (13th at 22:58) gapped just 31 seconds in leading RCHS to the team victory with 46 points over Chino Hills at 62.
